The second marking period finds Pre-Algebra students writing and solving equations. We are using formulas to solve real-world problems such as finding the area and perimeter of rectangles. Pre-Algebra Honors students are relating the concepts of number theory to algebra. They have learned to find the factors of numbers, to factor a number into primes, and to evaluate expressions with powers and exponents. Next, we will add factors and decimals.

This marking period began with various activities using the compound light microscope. Students became familiar with general operations to prepare themselves for extensive use over the next several chapters. We will spend a brief amount of time discussing the characteristics and needs of living things before moving into microbiology. Students will discover differences between animal and plant cells, and then delve into cellular processes such as diffusion, osmosis, and mitosis. We will conclude this marking period by examining the biological classification system and students will create their own classification keys!

Happy holidays from room 204. During the 2nd marking period, we will continue to learn about the 8 parts of speech, writing genres, literature, and starting a new in-class novel. Students have daily homework for their independent reading (logging hours=quiz grade), plus studying the 8 parts of speech. Even though sugar plums are dancing in our heads, we shouldn’t forget that midterms are just around the bend (Jan 22-25). REMINDER: My last day will be January 31st. I will be returning in June. Please feel free to email or call my voicemail. I will be working closely with my sub to help students with the transition. Thank you for all your support.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and a very happy New Year. When we return from break we will continue our study of Greek culture. Towards the end of the 2nd marking period, we will be reviewing and studying for the midterm exams. Midterm exams count toward your child’s final grade for the school year. In the 3rd marking period we will be studying Ancient Rome. I hope that you will continue to assist your child with their studies.
