Junior High School Alternate Program

Alternate Program Overview

A program for at- risk students who have had a difficult time with the transition into7th Grade by failing more than three core academic courses.  This program gives non-classified 7th grade students an opportunity to work on a combined 7th/8th grade curriculum and advance to the 9th grade. Students remain in the same classroom for all core curriculum classes and the classroom instruction focuses on developing and improving basic skills and provides more one-to-one instruction time. The student’s promotion into 9th grade is based on classroom grades, NJASK 7 and 8 scores, behavior and teacher recognition.

Philosophy

The Alternative Program is an educational program that offers a viable and suitable option for students who have not experienced success in their regular educational programs.  The curriculum., classroom instruction and classroom environment combine to assist students in basic organizational and study skills and develop and foster social and academic skills. In order to create a safe learning environment and one that creates connectiveness to the school, the students are exposed to a variety of instructional methods and activities that help facilitate social and emotional learning, citizenship, and academic skills. The program is based on creating success through rewards and incentives for positive academic and student behavior performance.

Curriculum

The Alternate Program utilizes and incorporates the 8th grade curriculum and the 7/8th grade Communications Math and English Curriculum.  The curriculum is adjusted based on the skill level of the students and the desired academic achievement outcomes.  Adjustments to the curriculum are made through pacing and the utilization of other educational resources and information.
