The
Social Studies department of the Pinelands
Regional School District is dedicated to
promoting a comprehensive program that prepares
all students to become active, informed citizens
of a democratic society. The curriculum includes
an instructional sequence that provides our
students with history, civics, and geography.
These are the core disciplines and are studied
both as separate disciplines and also in an
interdisciplinary format when appropriate.
Closely related are anthropology, sociology,
psychology, legal systems and economics. The
latter contribute to the social studies program
and are presented as electives to secondary
students. Advanced secondary students also have
the option of enrolling in AP European History,
AP American History, and/or AP Psychology during their junior or
senior year.
Every course in the social studies department
addresses the development of critical thinking
skills, reflective learning, and information
gathering. The informed citizen needs these
skills to participate intelligently in the
affairs of government, especially in regard to
voting and examining the issues of the day.
Both the junior high school and senior high school social
studies curricula have been updated and revised
to meet all of the goals and objectives of the
recently approved New Jersey State Core
Curriculum Content Standards. Aligning our
curricula with such standards offers our
students the opportunity to develop an
appreciation and understanding for the heritage
of America. |
